I have always given back to my community. Whether it was volunteering my time or giving money to support a cause. Several years ago I was listening to my favorite morning radio show -The Bob Rivers Show (now on Pod Cast) and he had a World Vision radio-thon. He actually did this several times and yes - my family now supports 3 children in Africa. We have done this over 10 years and actually had one child graduate and of course we added another in her place. World Vision is a great organization and worthy of support.
In 2012, the Sandy Hook school shooting was truly heartbreaking. As a parent, it shook the confidence of safety in what was a norm for our society - sending your kids to school. I knew I wanted to do something in honor of these little souls and I started to donate to St Jude Children's Research Hospital. Since I have worked in Health Care for over 20 years and my journey started working in a group home with kids with disabilities - I am aware of the need for St Jude.
So as a parent, your child will likely pick a sport or activity that will consume your weekends for a while. When our daughter was born, she came out of the womb singing. So when she started the 1st grade we enrolled her into our community theatre. Eight years later she continues to "live" at our community theater - Paradise Theatre. We know that musical theatre is part of her soul and a life long path for us. So we support our community theater which like most struggles financially. I have been on the Board of Directors, season ticket holder and give financial donations. I encourage you all to support the arts in your community. It is a wonderful place for our children to learn public speaking, work with a team, and build skills to assist with education.
